Over the course of Game of Thrones’ eight seasons, the show has had a bunch of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameos that have made pit stops in Westeros. Ed Sheeran popped up in season seven; country singer Chris Stapleton and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney both made quick appearances in the current season. But the cameo no one was expecting to see last night? A Starbucks cup.
In the episode titled “The Last of the Starks,” we pick up right after The Battle of Winterfell ends. The Night King and his army are dead and gone, but our heroes are still stressed. So stressed, in fact, that someone needed to get a grande Pumpkin Spice latte from Winterfell’s newest Starbucks location, apparently. The culprit? No one knows, but Daenerys seems like a pretty safe bet since the cup was placed right in front of her, among the typical metal goblets of wine and candles, as she gave Jon Snow the death stare during the intense scene. Did someone get her order wrong? Did she want it iced instead of hot? Did the barista misspell her name?
Seriously, why was there a Starbucks cup just casually chilling in the Game of Thrones episode? What is life like as a Starbucks barista in Winterfell? Was it really a Starbucks cup? What if, maybe, Westeros runs on Dunkin!?!? Some Twitter theorists were convinced it was just product placement (is Starbucks releasing a GoT-inspired drink?), while others believed it was the directors’ way to wink at fans who were complaining about last week’s episode being too dark. Ahead, the best reactions to Starbuck’s guest appearance in GoT.
