In a game in which whistles are all the rage, they were swallowed in the biggest moment.
The Saints had a third-and-10 from Los Angeles’ 13-yard line with under two minutes left Sunday, in which a first down would have meant New Orleans either could have gone for a touchdown or kicked a field goal without giving the ball back.
Drew Brees found Tommylee Lewis, running a wheel route to the right, and threw — and Lewis was clobbered by Nickell Robey-Coleman a good split-second before the ball arrived. Lewis went down, as did the ball, and everyone looked for a flag that was not thrown.
The officials ruled it legal, and the Saints kicked a field goal and kicked off. And sure enough, the Rams marched down the field and tied the game to send it into overtime. And in OT, they intercepted Drew Brees and kicked the game-winning field goal
The Rams completed the comeback, and this no-call will be remembered.
