Big Little Lies is coming back. But if you’re already a fan of the show and/or helplessly devoted to its newest cast member, Meryl Streep, then you know that. And you also probably want to know that today HBO released the first trailer for the second season of the series, along with the official premiere date: June 9.
If you haven’t seen the first season, there are spoilers ahead, so, you know, tread lightly. The trailer starts off much like the first season did, with the enticing use of “Cold Little Heart,” BLL‘s opening song, by Michael Kiwanuka. Then, we learn the collective name Celeste, Bonnie, Madeline, Renata, and Jane are called following the death of Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgård) in the first season: the Monterey Five. This name, Shailene Woodley’s character Jane says, makes her feel like she and the other women “have scarlet letters on [their] backs.”
Meryl Streep, Skarsgård’s mother in the series, wants to know what exactly “happened that night” when her son died. Very important pause: in the Mamma Mia films, Skarsgård’s real-life dad, Stellan Skarsgård, plays Streep’s characters’ former lover—whoa, the connections! Anyway, Streep, a very concerned mother tells Madeline that she doesn’t think she’ll “get the truth” if she asks her what went down between the “Monterey Five” on the night of the themed party that ended in a murder.
The trailer does a good job of building up the suspense of how HBO is going to take this thing forward after the end of the first season. There’s Meryl! There are more secrets! There’s at least one reference to The Scarlet Letter! Get ready for June 9.
