The Jaguars may be playing dumb until they can play their hand.

Despite speculation that Jacksonville hired new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, in part, because of the former Eagles quarterback coach’s relationship with Nick Foles, Jaguars coach Doug Marrone insisted Wednesday that the move had nothing to do with increasing the quarterback-needy team’s chances of landing the Super Bowl MVP — “Nick who?” Marrone replied, when asked about the connection — this offseason.

Tampering rules prohibit Marrone from speaking about interest in Foles, without punishment.

“Zero. Zero at all. Zero,” Marrone told reporters. “Don’t get me wrong, everyone we brought in we tried to get information from on personnel and things of that nature. I like to sit down with people and talk football. It’s hard for me. Most of the time I’m dealing with all the problems or I’m out here, so for me to do that is exciting. It didn’t have anything to do with that.”

While the Jaguars are expected to move on from the ill-fated Blake Bortles era, the Eagles are likely to part ways with Foles, who can become a free agent through a mutual option in his contract, allowing him to earn a massive payday on the market by paying Philadelphia $2 million.

DeFilippo served as Eagles quarterbacks coach from 2016-17, working with Foles as he led Philadelphia to its first Super Bowl title.

“What did come into play is someone that has ability, has been around veteran quarterbacks, has been around rookie quarterbacks, has been around a quarterback that came up and went on to do things well,” Marrone said. “So when you look at John, he had [Carson] Wentz, Foles as the quarterback’s coach, then you have someone [Kirk] Cousins that comes along, Derek Carr.

“So there was a lot of good variety in the types of players that he’s had and the types of players that he looked at. So for him, along with [QB coach] Scott Milanovich, obviously you feel good about the evaluation coming from the coaching side on the quarterbacks.”
