LUTHER, OK — A 14-year-old student was stabbed by a classmate on the first day of school at Luther High School in Oklahoma Thursday, according to officials and news reports. The Luther Fire Department said the incident happened at the high school auditorium and the female student was treated for multiple stab wounds to her upper back, arm, wrist and head.

Luther Mayor Jenni White said in a statement posted to the town’s Facebook page that the police were able to take the apparent perpetrator into custody immediately and the scene was secured.

“The Town Board and I are saddened by this situation and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and her family and all others involved,” White said. “We stand ready to assist in any way we are able.”

Luther Public Schools said in a short statement posted to Facebook that the incident happened during the high school’s assembly. A message posted to the same page earlier on Thursday welcomed back students to the first day of school.

The fire department said the student was airlifted to the hospital and is said to be in stable condition.

KFOR reported that the accused is a 14-year-old male student who was taken to a juvenile detention center.

Luther Police Chief David Randall said at a press conference that the student apparently did not express any remorse after the stabbing.

Asked what his thoughts were on the student’s apparent lack of remorse, Randall said he wondered “what is really going on through this young man’s mind.”

“I mean you’re gonna go ahead and stab an unknown person nine to 11 times and you have no feeling about it, now that’s a little concerning,” Randall said.

Randall also condemned photos posted to social media that apparently showed the victim being tended to by authorities. Authorities said they did not know of a motive in the stabbing.

The weapon was apparently a folding knife with a four-inch blade and a serrated edge, Randall said.

The investigation is ongoing.
