In an interview with Tennis View Magazine, the former world no. 1 commented on Americans mens tennis and how the Big Four – Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray – did not allow a generation of American players to triumph on the biggest stage.
I think there havent been a lot of Majors to go around outside of the guys that have been there, said Roddick. I kind of choose optimism and I think we actually have some good young players who have had a recent result in Australia not too long ago, so I think that should probably deserve more of the focus as opposed to looking in the rearview.
I just hope these guys want to continue to improve. I hope they treat it like a job, where when they wake up in the morning, they have a goal that they want to get better every day. Roddick was the last American man to win a Major in singles.
He won the 2003 US Open after defeating Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in straight sets in the final. Roddick also reached the Wimbledon final thrice (in 2004-05 and 2009) but lost all three matches to Federer. In 2009, Roddick went unbroken in the first four sets of the five-set final but Federer broke him in the 30th game of the fifth set to win his sixth Wimbledon title.
Roddick recently played an exhibition match against Jim Courier at the New York Open last week. The match started off the tournament. In an all-American final, Riley Opelka defeated Brayden Schnur in three sets to win the title.
