The Narendra Modi-led BJP government’s signature campaignSwachh Bharat Abhiyan has faced a series of criticism from the Opposition and several civil rights group for its misplaced priorities of widely advertising the government’s policy while bringing little difference at the grassroots level but if the data from Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) is to be believed, India has made significant progress in this regard.

It has now been revealed that the Swachh Bharat Mission has so far prevented 3,00,000 deaths, averted 200 million diarrhoeal cases every year and saved Rs 50,000 per family per year in an ODF environment. According to DDWS, non-ODF villages are 12.7 times more likely to face groundwater contamination than the ODF villages, as reported by DownToEarth, the magazine run by the Centre For Science And Environment.
