Earlier this month, Georgia’s governor Brian Kemp signed a bill into law that would ban abortions after a fetal “heartbeat” is detected, which usually occurs around five or six weeks of pregnancy. At that point, many women don’t even know they’re pregnant, effectively banning abortion in the state.
Women across the country quickly reacted to the news, and actress Busy Philipps took time on her late-night show to talk about the law and share her own story of getting an abortion at 15 years old. She said, “The statistic is one in four women will have an abortion before age 45, and that statistic sometimes surprises people, and maybe you’re sitting there thinking, ‘I don’t know a woman who would have an abortion.’ Well, you know me.”
Then, on the same day that Alabama’s governor signed a bill into law banning almost all abortions in the state, she took to Twitter with a similar message. She wrote, “1 in 4 women have had an abortion. Many people think they don’t know someone who has, but #youknowme. So let’s do this: if you are also the 1 in 4, let’s share it and start to end the shame. Use #youknowme and share your truth.”
Her words prompted a number of women to share their own stories on the platform with the hashtag #YouKnowMe. Below, just a handful of the responses:
